Toronto-based three-piece Elliott Brood took the stage at London’s Call the Office Thursday night and treated the energetic crowd to a night of vigorous and menacing “death country.” Vocalist Mark Sasso weaves a sinister series of gloomy tales set to foot-pounding rhythms and twangy guitar and banjo strumming. Despite the moody and morose nature of the lyrical content, the band never once let the energy subside, and even when the tempo slowed, the tension always remained high and often built up to a frenzied release. Highlights of the evening included fan favourites from their 2005 release Ambassador, including “Johnny Rooke” and “Acer Negundo” as well as several songs from their upcoming record.
